I noticed him on my first day's work at the Orchard in Provence that summer. He was tall, with dark hair that looked almost black and dark eyes ringed with long lashes. I found myself looking over at him time and time again for attraction had me tensing my stomach. It wasn't until a week later, that I found myself working next to him. We picked fruit until the bell announced break time.
I gulped down my water, for the heat was oppressive, looking bereft at my empty bottle, for I knew I would have to work thirsty until lunch. "Here?" he said throwing me a bottle. "Cold?" I exclaimed, "How did you do that?"
"Look," he said, pointing to his bag, there were solar panels on the outside and a mini cooler inside. "That's ingenious," I said pressing the bottle to my forehead cooling myself. "This job leaves plenty of time for thinking of ideas Elisa," he said. "How do you know my name?" I asked. "People talk, especially men about girls they like," he said, looking over at the other workers. My cheeks instantly reddened. "What's your name?" I asked. "Joe."
The bell sounded then and we returned to work. After lunch, I brought two bottles of water with me. "Give them to me," he said before I could ask him to store them for me. We worked until the afternoon break and we gulped our water down quickly. "Would you like to spend the day with me tomorrow?" he asked. "What did you have in mind?" I asked smiling. "Just dress for cycling," he said.
The next morning I met him with plenty of water in my pack. He held his hands out for my water and packed into his cooler. "I thought we could cycle around Avignon, I've heard it's a beautiful city." "Let's go then," I said with a smile. Chiding myself I realised all I did was smile in his company.
We cycled inside the city walls all morning, stopping only to take pictures and quench our thirst. At midday we found a place to sit next to the river Rhone. Joe took out a blanket which he lay down for us to sit on and unpacked a picnic for us to eat.
"What do you do when you're not working here Elisa?" Joe asked biting into a juicy tomato. "This and that. Any job I can get," I shrugged. "And you?" "I make things to sell, like the water cooler. I may stay here and find a shop that will sell them." He reached over and brushed a strand of hair behind my ear. "Elisa, I would like to see you again," he said, his eyes fixed on mine. "I would like that," I smiled. "You are so beautiful my Elisa," he said drawing me into his arms. He flicked his tongue over his lips before pressing them to mine. We lay on the blanket, kissing, and talking until the sun set.

The Assistant
A policeman stood outside my door. I opened the door again to check again that he was still there, and he smiled at me, his white teeth shining bright against his skin, "Still here." I closed the door again and walked to the window. What bad luck, a weekend in the Caribbean and I was stuck in my room. I poured two glasses of rum & coke and took one out to him. "Can I sit with you for a bit?" I asked. "You really shouldn't Ma'am." "I'm so bored and lonely," I said sipping my frothy drink. "Why would anyone want to hurt me?" "I don't know," he watched me, pity on his face. I rested my head on his shoulder peeking at him through my lashes, "Keep me company?"

The Grosvenor Twins Part 2
"Morning," Josh said turning on the bedside lamp in our bedroom, "I've made you breakfast."
"Thanks Josh," I said sitting up in bed and running my hands through my messy long hair to tidy it.
"You look perfect," he said kissing me on my cheek and sitting the tray on my lap, "Eat up. By the way I'm working from home today, shall we have lunch together?"
"Sounds good," I said taking a bite of toast and wondering if I would make it back from David's by then.
Waking up was always strange, I felt fine until a few moments later I would remember how I had lost my sister and grief would hit me, a physical pain in my heart. Some days I only felt anger towards my twin who had suggested 'one last prank' and had died leaving me to sort out the mess. Clara and I had swapped places in each other's lives a day before she carelessly crossed the road without looking and had been killed almost instantly.
I had seen no solution to the situation I was stuck in when Clara died, I was stuck in the role of Josh's girlfriend so I grieved for the loss of my husband as well as my sister. I spend most of my time with David though, and we grieving together as well as going through my belongings. Clara and David had never been close but he grew close with the girl he thought was Clara. It broke my heart to see him hurting but as his sister in law I could comfort him and help him. And I wouldn't lose him from my life.
I ate the breakfast that Josh had made me and after a shower I walked to David's house. That morning we listened to my favourite music as we went through, and mostly threw out, books. I remembered, only as I arrived back home early that evening, Josh suggesting us having lunch together. He was sitting at the kitchen table as I walked indoors and hung up my coat in the cupboard under the stairs.
He watched me without saying a word as I filled up the kettle and switched it on, "Josh I'm so sorry, I completely forgot about lunch until just now."
"Did David cook you something for lunch?" he asked, his face a mask showing no emotion.
"I heated up some soup for us."
"Clara, I know David needs you but please remember that I'm here for you too."
"Too long."

"David and I are both grieving and I think it helps to do so together. I'm struggling to come to terms with this," I said trying to swallow the lump in my throat.
"I know," he said quickly standing and holding me tightly, "I know sweetie."
"I know," he said quickly standing and holding me tightly, "I know sweetie."
He rocked me in his arms and I held on tight, thankful for his warmth.
"Maybe it's silly but I worry that David will take you away from me. You're spending so much time with him at the moment. I hardly see you."
"I'm sorry I've been neglecting you Josh_"
"You haven't," he said releasing me and lifting my chin with his hand so that I was looking into his eyes, "I'm grieving too, for her and for your loss, just don't push me away, okay?"
"Okay," I said nodding.
He leaned down to kiss me and I continued to cling to him, holding him tight. We separated, breathless, and I began to undo the buttons on my shirt.
"Are you sure_" he began.
"Yes," I said sounding more confident than I felt. My stomach was tight with nerves. I lead him upstairs to our bedroom.
Once undressed we held each other under the duvet and although it felt strange it was wonderful. We made love and Josh was so gentle and kind I felt tears sting my eyes.
"Are you okay?" he asked with a worried expression on his face.
"Yes," I said blinking the tears away, "They're happy tears, I'm sorry I've..."
"It's okay," he smiled, his eyes shining, "I'm happy too, it's so long since we've been open with each other."
"Too long."
Josh fell asleep still holding me in his arms and for a moment I smiled before I thought about David, all alone. I gently slipped out of Josh's arms and after dressing I headed to see David.
He was curled up on the lounge carpet sobbing. I knelt down and wrapped my arms around him.
"Shh," I said rocking him in my arms until he became calm.
"You're so much like her," he said stroking my fringe away from my face and pressing his lips gently to mine, "You're too much alike," he said and he began to sob again.
"Do you want me to go?" I asked confused and hurt.
He ran his thumb across my lips which were still throbbing from his kiss, "Yes, I think that would help."
"Okay, I said quickly standing up and leaving the house. As I ran the short distance back to Clara's house I cried, letting the tears run down my face and drip onto my clothes. I unlocked the door as quietly as I could and headed inside. Josh was sitting in the lounge.
"You went to him didn't you," Josh said with a sigh.
I nodded sadly, "I had to, I feel so guilty and sad for him. But he wants me to stay away, he thinks I'm too much like her."
"Do you want to be with me or not Clara?" he said standing up and taking hold of the tops of my arms, "I have to know because I feel a fool."
"I'm sorry Josh but I don't know," I cried, "I'm a mess, please give me some time."
He looked into my eyes for a few moments, "It's been six months Clara. I need to know if you want me or not. I'll go stay with my brother for a couple of days to give you time to decide what you want," he released my arms and walked upstairs. Ten minutes later he walked back down the stairs with a bag.
I felt my bottom lip begin to wobble and more tears spilled from my eyes as he pulled on his coat.
He frowned when he saw my face but he gently wiped the tears away with his hands and kissed me, "I'm sorry Clara, it's just that I need an honest answer. If you really need me, give me a call, otherwise I'll see you on Friday," he kissed me once more before picking up his bag and leaving. I heard his car engine start before he drove away.
I felt lost, with no one to speak to. I turned to a place I hadn't been since childhood, church and confession, where I told a priest the whole story. He didn't judge me in any way and I left with a sense of peace for the first time in six months. He gave me one piece of advice.
He said that the past is behind, that I should learn from it. The present is here. I should make a choice and live it.
I walked home deep in thought and after making a cup of tea I thought about my choices. I could choose to commit wholeheartedly to Josh. I could tell David the truth and hope that he would be willing to accept me back into his life. My third option was to move on with my life alone. I knew that whatever decision I made would be final.
***
I waited at the dining table for Josh on Friday afternoon. He came into the house and straight into the kitchen where he said, "Hello."
"Hi Josh," I said pointing to the seat opposite me.
He sat down and took my hand, "I've missed you," he said glancing into my eyes.
"I've missed you too," I said, "Did you have fun at your brother's?"
"I drove him crazy worrying about you," he said, his cheeks reddening slightly, "Have you been okay?"
"Yes I have thanks. You were right, I needed to make a decision. Would you like some tea?" I asked as I heard the kettle boil.
"Yes please," he said smiling before adding, "Can I ask you something?"
"Yes, what is it?" I said as I walked over to the kettle and pored the tea.
"Can I kiss you one more time before you give me your answer? Just in case."
I felt him standing behind me and I turned around looking up into his eyes. He leaned down to kiss me, pulling me closer closing the space between us. He released me a few moments later saying, "Sorry, I didn't wait for your answer."
I smiled, "My answer would have been yes," I said before taking our drinks over to the table where we sat down opposite each other again.
I took a sip of tea before looking at Josh who was watching me nervously, "So what have you decided?"
"After much thought, my answer is yes I want to be with you Josh. However_"
"That doesn't sound like a yes," Josh said.
"Listen," I said stroking his hand, "I have to support David, he's my brother in law. You need to agree that you're happy for me to support him."
"I don't want you spending too much time with him alone, he'll get too attached to you and it's confusing for him. He told you that himself."
"So you'll agree to us supporting him together?"
Josh thought for a moment, "Okay, I'll agree to that."
"Good. I think we should invite him for dinner twice a week, and maybe to stay. He's not coping on his own."
"How about dinner tomorrow night and then we'll see how we feel, make a decision together?"
"Okay. You text him now."
"I'll do it quickly, because I need to kiss you and show you how happy I am about your decision," Josh grinned typing into his phone.
***
We settled into a routine where David would join us for dinner and spend the evening with us twice a week and sometimes he stayed in the spare room. We grieved together, the three of us. I felt myself beginning to heal, to accept the loss of my sister and husband. And I gained a boyfriend who also became my best friend. I was happy.
I returned to the church a year later where the same priest ushered me into a back room.
"I thought I would never see you again," he said, "You've been in my prayers."
"That's kind of you. I returned to thank you for your advice."
"I hope it helped you."
"It really helped. Saying thank you doesn't seem enough."
"It's plenty," he smiled, "I'm always here if you need someone to talk to, although I must say that you look happy, radiant even. It looks like you made the right choice."
"Thank you. I feel sure that I did, even though it wasn't easy," I said smiling.
"So who did you choose?" he asked and I whispered my answer into his ear.
"I see," he chuckled, "Good choice. Now let me walk you out," he said and he lead me through the church to the door, "You're always welcome if you need someone to talk to."
"Thank you," I said and I waved as I stepped out into the warm sunshine to where Josh was waiting for me.
"You all done?"
"Yes, thanks for waiting," I said wrapping my arms around his neck and kissing him.
Leaning back he said, "Have I told you how happy I am?"
"Oh just about everyday!" I laughed, "Have I told you how much I love you?"
"I love you too Mrs Hudson," he said kissing me again and linking his hand with mine. The diamond ring on my finger sparkled as the sun reflected off it.
The End.
Are you wondering what I said to the priest?
I told him that I chose to let go of the past, to live my life to the full and be happy. Life had given me a second chance and I had to grab it & hold on to it with both hands.
He was curled up on the lounge carpet sobbing. I knelt down and wrapped my arms around him.

The Grosvenor Twins
I haven't written many stories recently as I've been busy doing a
writing course. However I felt like being creative today.
The identical Grosvenor twins Sarah and Clara had been playing pranks since they could speak. Things had changed since Sarah had married.
The identical Grosvenor twins Sarah and Clara had been playing pranks since they could speak. Things had changed since Sarah had married.
"No Clara," Sarah said
forcefully looking at her identical twin.
"Come on Sarah, one last prank. I
won't ask again, we're adults now."
Sarah sighed, she was happy with her life,
she didn't want to mess around. She also wanted to be close to her sister who
she had drifted away from since she had married, "Okay."
"Yes," Clara said happily,
"So we'll switch for one week. For the last time"
"A whole week?"
"Yes."
"But your boyfriend would want to
have sex."
"So what? So would your
husband."
"But I want to stay true to my vows."
"Just put him off, it shouldn't be difficult for a week and Josh wouldn't notice a
difference."
"Come on, he would and so would David."
"If they notice, we'll swap
back."
Sarah groaned.
"You agreed to do this Sarah, are you really telling me your so happy with your life that you don't you want a
change?"
"Yes I'm happy with my life Clar. I'll
do it for you though."
So they agreed to swap places the next
afternoon. They met for lunch in town and swapped clothes and bags in the
toilets before heading to their homes. They agreed to meet at the same cafe the next day to debrief.
Sarah was nervous as she opened the door
to Clara's house and said "Hi."
"Hi gorgeous," said Clara's
boyfriend Josh and he leaned in to kiss her.
She kissed him back but felt sick when she
thought about her wedding vows and she already missed David like crazy.
"Hey, what's wrong Clara?" he said noticing the tears shining in her eyes.
"Oh nothing, I'm just tired."
"Come and sit down, dinner's
ready."
"Thanks honey," said Sarah
imitating how Clara spoke to Josh and they sat down to eat.
Sarah was impressed with Josh, he was kind and generous towards his girlfriend. However she was tense all evening, and felt a
sense of relief, and a different kind of worry, when it was time for bed.
She changed into Clara's bed clothes and
climbed into bed, ignoring the sight of Josh stripping off. He climbed into bed
a moment later in his boxer shorts.
"Goodnight," he said and kissed
her. She felt his hot breath on her face and he pushed his warm tongue into her
mouth. Pulling back he asked, "Do you want to...?"
"Not tonight." She said,
"Sorry."
"It's okay darling, sleep well."
Sarah turned over to sleep but Josh immediately closed the gap between them, spooning her and holding her hand. She kept her eyes open for over an
hour waiting for him to fall asleep and move but he continued to spoon her and
hold her hand as he slept. She couldn't understand why Clara wanted to switch
places when she had a wonderful, thoughtful man at home. Finally she fell
asleep dreaming of David but for some reason she couldn't reach him.
The next lunchtime, after working in the
morning she walked to the cafe to meet Clara, planning to tell her that the
prank needed to end. She waited outside and waved as she saw her sister. For some reason Clara ran
across the road completely recklessly and time slowed for Sarah as she saw the van
hit her sister and knock her over the bonnet.
Screaming, she ran to her sister, whose
blood was making a puddle across the road.
"Oh Clara, Clara no," she cried
over and over.
An ambulance arrived a few minutes later
as well as the police. They tried to speak to her but she just wasn't capable
of speaking logically. Clara died on the cold ground as the paramedics worked
on her. Sarah just felt numb as her precious sister stopped breathing. They
kept asking her, what's her name? Where does she live? But Sarah couldn't
think, let alone respond.
They took her sister to the hospital where
David and Josh were waiting, having been called by the police on Sarah's phone.
She ran to them, and they all cried together for a long time. Eventually Josh pulled her into his arms. She cried harder longing to be in her husband's arms, to comfort him and tell him that she was still alive. But how could she explain it to them. They would both be angry and Josh's heart would break. Sarah looked between them trying desperately to find a solution. Finally she realised that
this prank would have to continue. Forever.

The Visit
Theresa painted the home-made mask onto her face and applied cucumber slices to her eyes. She fell asleep a few minutes later and didn't hear Lee open the door and head into the living room. He kissed her gently on her mouth, the only part of her face free from the mask and then he tickled her stomach.
“Ahhhhh” she screamed and the cucumber slices flew off her eyes.
“It’s too much fun tickling you” he
said laughing.
“I just wish I wasn't ticklish”
Theresa laughed and quickly jumped up when he aimed to tickle her feet.
“Enough!” Theresa said stopping him
"Let me get this mask off and then we can eat"
"Great” he said picking up the
cucumber pieces and popping them in his mouth.
“Ew, I can’t believe you ate those”
Theresa said cringing.
Theresa washed her face and then they ate jacket potatoes with lots of cheese and salad.
Theresa washed her face and then they ate jacket potatoes with lots of cheese and salad.
“Don’t forget that my sister Anne
is staying with us at the weekend!”
“Should I make myself scarce?”
“No! Seriously, I’ll need your help.
She’s not the easiest person to spend time with”
Anne arrived on Friday early
evening and Lee carried her bags up to the spare room.
“Hi Anne, lovely to see you”
“You too Theresa, it’s been too
long since I last saw you”
“It has” said Theresa “Dinner’s
ready so come through into the dining room”
“Oh no!” Anne said when she saw the
food.
“What’s wrong?” said Theresa.
“I don’t eat meat” she said and
turned away from the lasagne that Theresa had slaved over for most of the
afternoon.
“Don’t worry, I’ll make you
something else” Theresa said and mouthed “Help!” to Lee.
They both headed into the kitchen.
“Give her some of the salad with
some cheese and pickles” He whispered and quickly kissed her “Don’t worry,
it’ll be fine”
“Thanks darling” she said and made
a plate of food for Anne.
“Here you go!” Theresa said as she
placed the plate in front of Anne.
“Thank you!”
Finally they could eat although it
was a shame that the Lasagne was cold.
The next morning after breakfast of
cereal and toast, which fortunately didn't cause any problems, they headed into
London to the Natural History museum.
“The dinosaur really is huge” said
Theresa snapping away with her camera “It’s been so long since I've been here!”
“It’s been a long time for me too”
said Lee “It’s all so fascinating”
He was interested in the insects
mostly! Anne just looked
around in silence. Theresa quickly headed to the gift shop and chose a book
about insects for Lee. She hid in her bag to give to him later.
They made their way to Buckingham
Palace to see the changing of the guards next.
“We’ll have to come back soon and
see Kate and Will’s baby!” Theresa said to Lee.
“Maybe I’ll come with you” said
Anne “I love the royal family!”
“Shall we go somewhere to eat?”
suggested Theresa.
“It’s about that time” said Lee “Let’s
go to Hyde Park, I’ve never been there before”
After eating the picnic Anne
headed off to find a toilet. Lee pulled Theresa closer so she was sitting
between his crossed legs and took the chance to kiss her.
“She’s hard work” he said and
kissed Theresa again.
“Shall we relax here this
afternoon, it’s lovely to see the sun make an appearance” she said squinting at
the sun.
“Sounds good to me” Lee said tucking
Theresa’s hair behind her ears and kissing her.
When Anne came back from the toilet
she asked “Are we leaving London soon?”
“No!” Theresa said shocked
“I've planned activities for the afternoon too or we might relax here for the
afternoon” she said looking at Lee.
“What have you planned?” he asked.
“To go to Madam Tussaud’s and then I
thought we could find somewhere to have afternoon tea”
“How about we go to Madam Tussard’s
and see how you feel Anne?” suggested Lee.
“Oh okay”
Theresa turned and kissed him again
before mouthing “Thank you”
So they took the central line train
and headed to Madam Tussaud’s.
“Look Lee, there’s Frank Lampard”
said Theresa “Would you like a picture with him?”
“Definitely” he replied standing
next to Frank’s waxwork. “Who do you want a picture with?”
“Maybe David Beckham” she said
spotting him and Lee quickly took the picture.
“Anne would you like a picture with
anyone?” asked Theresa.
“Um, I’m not sure” she responded
looking bored.
Lee whispered “Ignore her” into
Theresa’s ear and grabbed her hand.
“Ooh look” he said and pulled her
towards the waxwork “You like David Tennant, want a picture?”
“Definitely” replied Theresa “Come
into the picture Anne”
“If I must” Anne muttered.
Theresa spotted Kylie Minogue next in
those gold hot pants which made Lee happy so she took a quick picture of them.
“I guess that’s it” said Lee and
they found the nearest exit.
“You still want to leave Anne?”
Theresa asked.
“I think so, is that okay?”
“Of course” replied Theresa and
they made their way to the tube station. When they arrived home Lee rushed to
the supermarket to buy some vegetarian food for Anne and they had a quick meal
of burgers and oven chips.
“I have a surprise for you” Theresa
teased as she and Lee headed to bed later that night.
“What is it?”
“Wait and see” she responded cheekily.
He saw the book as they entered the
room.
“Wow Theresa, thank you” he said
smiling as he started to delve into the pages. He stayed up late reading long
after Theresa fell asleep.
The next morning after breakfast they headed to the nearby seaside
and had a walk on the beach before stopping for fish and chips with plenty of
salt and vinegar. It tasted extra delicious in the sea air. Anne was leaving in
the afternoon so they drove home and she packed.
“Do you need any help?” Theresa asked as she headed into the spare
room.
But Anne’s phone rang then so she left her to it. Once off the
phone she came to find her sister.
“I've just found out some fantastic
news” she told Theresa.
“That’s great, what news?”
“I've been offered a job here!
We'll be able to spend more time together! Won’t that be wonderful?!”

Jem's Painting Week Away
Jem felt relaxed as she gently applied paint to the paper. It
was the sixth day she’d
been here in Sussex on this painting course and she didn’t want to
think about it ending.
"That looks beautiful" said
George the teacher.
"Thank you George! I'm so glad I
came"
"There's nothing better than painting
in the countryside! It's a great way to relax, and thankfully the rain has
stayed away this week" he laughed.
"We really have been so lucky with
the weather! I am finding this relaxing!" Jem said.
"I'll let you get on" he said
lightly touching the top of her arm and walking away.
"Ooh he touched your arm?" said
Ruth a friend Jem had made on this week away.
"Ha ha lucky me"
"Very lucky indeed!!" she
whispered laughing.
"If only_"
"Ssh forget about that for now and
enjoy his cute presence!" she laughed.
After a shower in the hotel at the end of
the day Jem headed down to the restaurant for dinner. Jem was clearly running
late as the only space left was next to George. She sat down and said "Hi"
to everyone. Ruth just winked at her.
"Hi Jem" said George.
"Hi George, how long have you been
teaching courses like this?" Jem said enjoying the close up view of his
green eyes.
"Not long, I used to work in an
office, and paint in my spare time"
"What happened?" asked Jem
sensing a story.
"I almost died, in car accident. It
took quite few months to recover! I suddenly realised how lucky I was and I
realised that being happy is more important than how much money you earn! So I
quit my job and started teaching painting as well as exhibiting my own work.
"You're right! We all focus too much
on money these days! I'd love to see your painting!!" said Jem.
"You can if you like! I have an
exhibition in London in two weeks time" he wrote the address and details
on some paper.
"Thank you! I hope I can make
it!"
"It would be wonderful to see you
again" he said and Jem's stomach was suddenly full of butterflies.
"You too!" she said and turned
to speak to someone else before she blushed.
"You know" started George
"You are more than good enough to exhibit too"
"You think so?"
He nodded "If I see you at my
exhibition I will discuss it with you"
"Thank you George! I will try and get
there"
Jem suddenly realised she had been hogging
George's attention for most of the evening and she noticed some jealous eyes
looking at her. But these girls had nothing to be jealous of! George would
never fancy her. She turned away anyway to speak to Jane, the girl on her left.
"Drinks?" Ruth suddenly asked whispering
in her ear.
"Yes please!"
"Come on then" she said grabbing
Jem's elbow and heading to the bar area. "Cocktail?"
"Why not!" said Jem hoping the
strong drink would still her stomach.
Once served they sat down and clinked
glasses.
"I think George rather likes
you" Ruth said with a sparkle in her eye.
"I don't think so!" Jem said
feeling a little sad.
"Why not Jem?"
"Come on Ruth you know why!"
"But_"
"Just leave it, I'm not interested in
him anyway" lied Jem.
"Alright, sorry!" said Ruth and
changed the subject "I hope we can meet up sometime, I'll miss you when we
leave tomorrow!"
"Me too, I'm happy we met! George is
having an exhibition in two weeks, let's meet then!
"I hope I can make it!"
They had a few more cocktails and when the
music started they were on their feet straight away dancing and singing along!
When Jem heard the first line of the slow song she left the dance floor to find
a seat but instead she ran into George.
"Dance?" asked George suddenly
holding out his hand to her.
"Okay"
He pulled her close to him and wrapped his
arms around her waist. She leaned her head on his chest with her arms around
him and they slowly moved to the music. She felt him kiss her head and looked
up. He kissed her gently on her mouth and smiled.
"Why did you kiss me?" she asked
bluntly.
He looked confused but then, still holding
her hand he lead her out of the room into the hotel lounge where they found a
sofa to sit on.
"I kissed you because I like you Jem. Surely
you are aware of that?"
"I..." she mumbled "Why
though?"
"Why do I like you? Such an easy question,
you are beautiful, kind and thoughtful. You love painting like I do..."
"But I'm old!!"
"Yes, you are older than me, but do
you think your age matters to me?"
"But there are many girls here your
own age! Don't you like any of them?"
"They are nice girls, but I'm not
interestied in them the way I am with you!"
"How old are you George?"
"I'm 25!"
"Well I'm 40, that's 15 years
difference"
"Jem" he said then paused before
bluntly asking "Are you interested or not?"
Jem responded "Okay I am interested
but_"
He smiled happily and pulled her into his
arms kissing her before she could continue speaking.
They met two weeks later at George's
exhibition. He smiled when he saw her and kissed her in front of all the people
there before they walked around looking at his paintings.
"Come home with me?" he said
after everyone had left.
"Where do you live George?" Jem
asked "I know so little about you"
"I live in the Cotswold’s and I also
have a flat here in London where I plan to stay tonight. Come back with me for dinner?"
"Are you going to cook for me?"
Jem responded.
"It's your lucky day, I made lasagna
earlier!!"
They walked arm in arm back to George's
flat and ate he wonderful food he had made with plenty of red wine. Afterwards
they relaxed with coffee and mint chocolates. They talked and kissed, getting
to know each other.

A Short Story - Moving On
My colleagues made me give my
number to a man called Ben when we were at the pub last Friday. I'm usually the
only one of my colleagues that doesn't go to these social events but I made
an exception this time. Ben rang me the following Monday
"Hi Julia, I'm Ben, Do you
remember me from the pub last Thursday?"
"Hi Ben" I said which
caught the attention of everyone in the office "Yes I do remember
you!"
"Would you still be interested
in arranging a date sometime?"
By this time Ruth was standing next
to me. She whispered in my ear
"Don't you dare say no!"
"I..."
"I'm serious!" she said
"You have a tendency to refuse to get involved with life, give him a
chance"
When I didn't respond she added
"Do you remember how many questions he asked about you, he focused all his
attention on you whenever he spoke, and I'm pretty sure he bought you at least
two drinks!"
"He did"
I turned back to the phone and
quickly said "Yes"
"Great" he said and he
sounded relieved as if he had expected me to say no! How about Friday? Are you
free then?"
"Um..." I started.
Just then Ruth pinched a tiny bit
of my skin with her long fingernails
"Ouch"
"Are you okay?" said Ben
into the phone.
"Sorry, my colleague just
pinched my arm"
"Ha ha, does a lot of pinching
go on in your workplace?" he asked and I could feel that he was smiling.
"Generally not" I said
laughing with a big grin on my face.
Ruth whispered in my ear again
"He's making you laugh, you
have to say yes to him. Just one date and see how well you get on with
him"
"But Fridays_"
"One single Friday, you can
make an exception surely?"
"I guess so"
"Or see if he's free on
Saturday"
"Um are you free on Saturday
instead?" I asked into the mouthpiece.
"I'm not unfortunately, is
Friday no good?"
"It will be okay, see you on
Friday then, bye"
I hung up the phone.
It rang again immediately
"Hello"
"Hello this is Ben, shall we
arrange where to meet?" he said laughing.
"Oh yes, whoops!!! Where shall
we meet?"
"I'm sure your pinching
colleague distracted your attention, I can pick you up from your place?"
"Okay" I said and gave
him my address "See you on Friday"
"Bye Julia"
"Bye"
Ruth turned to me saying
"Sorry I pushed you honey, are
you okay about it?"
"I'm not but I suppose I would
have to stop at some point. Can you help me find something to wear?"
"Of course, shall we go
shopping after work on Friday, keep Thursday free for you?"
"Thank you" said
"You're a great friend Ruth"
"Ahh thank you darling, so are
you" she said hugging me "Back to work then"
Ruth and I rushed out of work on
Friday and headed straight to Debenhams.
"Just grab some dresses you
like" she said "and I'll pick some for you to try on too"
"Okay" I said heading for
the racks of black clothes while she grabbed some bright dresses.
When she saw my arms were full of
black dresses she shook her head, and told me "Not black, you wear it too
often" and to demonstrate her point she looked down at my outfit.
"I like this, the trousers are
comfortable"
"Hmm"
We rushed over to the fitting rooms
and she handed me a few dresses to try on.
"Lime green?"
"Yes! It will suit your
colouring"
"I doubt it"
"Just get it on!" she told
me.
"Oi bossy boots" I said.
"I might be bossy but it's for
your own good" she said.
Once the first dress was on I
headed out to see what her reaction was.
"What do you think?"
"Not good, let's see the next
one"
After trying on the next one I
asked again "What do you think?"
When we arrived she asked me
"Are you okay?"
I struggled for the words to
respond "I'm just not finding it easy to let the past go. I don't think I
even want to let it go"
"He would_"
"Don't!" I stopped her.
"Sorry" she whispered
"Go have a shower"
After my shower which gave me time
to compose myself Ruth started to apply some make up. I almost fell asleep
because the gentle way she applied the makeup was so soothing.
"Wake up Cinderella" she
said when finished.
I opened my eyes and straightened
my shiny auburn hair before getting changed. Ruth came in and put the necklace
on me before saying
"You're done, have a look in
the mirror"
I walked over to the mirror and saw
someone I didn't recognize at all.
"Can you do this for me every
day?" I joked staring at the beautiful women in the mirror.
"Cheeky!!" she said
hitting me playfully on my arm "You look beautiful, you should wear colour
more often, I can help you if you like"
"Thanks" I whispered
choked up. I was aware that I didn't look after myself as well as I should.
The doorbell rang just then, my
date had arrived.
"Go on then, answer the
door"
So I walked to the door and opened
it saying
"Hi Ben"
"Hi Julia, you look.... so
beautiful" he said.
"Thank you, so do you" I said
blushing and suddenly flustered "I mean, handsome, not beautiful"
"Thanks Julia" he said with a
smile.
Ruth passed me my jacket and told me she
would lock up when she had packed all her makeup away.
"Thank you so much Ruth" I said
kissing her cheek.
"Thank you for agreeing to come
tonight" said Ben as I closed the front door "How has your week
been?"
"Good thanks" I said "And
yours?"
"Better once you agreed to meet
me" he said smiling. He had lots of lines around his bright blue eyes so I
could see that smiling a lot was natural for him.
We arrived then at the Chinese restaurant
and Ben opened the door for me. The waiter took us to our table and gave us
menus.
"There's so much to choose from"
said Ben.
"Too much, it all looks
delicious"
"How about us ordering a few dishes
to share?"
"Sounds good to me"
So when the waiter returned Ben ordered
quite a few dishes that we had agreed we both liked. It arrived quickly and the
portions looked very generous.
"It looks delicious" I said.
"It certainly does, dig in" he
said starting to fill his plate
"I love food, and cooking" I
said.
"What's your signature dish?"
"Steak and chips"
"Wow" he said "That sounds
wonderful, I love to cook too, and I work as a baker"
"Do you enjoy it?"
"Yes, I love my job, what do you
do?"
"I work in admin, sorry that's not
very interesting.
"Not at all, do you enjoy it?"
"It wasn't my dream but yes I
do"
"What was your dream?"
"To open a restaurant" I said
then quickly changed the subject "Favourite cake?"
"Cakes" he said laughing
"My favourite subject. I love them all. How about you?"
"I love all cakes too" I said
laughing.
We were both getting very messy eating the
pork ribs which were sweet and sour flavoured but for some reason it didn't
matter. Afterwards they gave us hot towels so we could clean our hands and
faces.
"Would you like any dessert?"
Ben asked.
"I'm too full unfortunately" I
said holding my stomach.
"Me too but I enjoyed it"
He quickly gave his card to the waiter.
"Can I_"
"No" he responded quickly.
Ben told me he would walk me home and he
gave me his elbow so I could put my arm through his.
"Do you mind me asking about your
dream restaurant? Why didn't you follow your dream?"
"I don't know if I can tell you"
"You don't have to, I'm a good
listener though"
We came across a bench and sat down.
"My....husband....died" I said
starting to sob "I couldn't carry on without him"
"Oh that's awful, I'm so sorry to
hear of your loss sweetheart, was it recent?"
"Ten years. I always go to the
cemetery on Friday nights to see him"
"And let me guess, you didn't go
tonight because you agreed to meet me?"
I just nodded in reply.
"We'll go now" Ben said and we
stood up and started walking. The cemetery wasn't far from where I lived so we
got there quickly. I lead Ben to the grave and knelt down in front of it. Ben
walked away giving me some space.
"I love you John" I spoke hoping
in some way he might here "I miss you so much"
The tears dripped onto the ground where
his body lay. Ben came over then and started stroking my back.
"John! Do you mind if I date your
lovely lady?"
As he said it the full moon shone came out
of the clouds and shone on us and the grave.
"I think that's a sign" said
Ben.
I wiped the tears from my cheeks and
smiled looking at Ben, his bright blue eyes shining in the moonlight.
"Shall we go out next week?" I
boldly asked him. Such a lovely man.
He walked closer and pushed a strand of
hair out of my eye and tucked it behind my ear.
"You ready to move on, I don't mean
to forget him but to start living again?"
"Yes, suddenly I realise I am
ready"
"Next week then" he said leading
me out of the cemetery and back home "And we can chat more about your
restaurant"
"I can't wait"
"Goodnight then Julia, see you next
week" he said quickly kissing my cheek and walking away.

A Short Story - My Best Friend
My best friend Jason and I have arranged to meet and go for drinks after we finish work on Friday. People often ask if it's strange to have a man as a best friend but I love it. He's great fun to spend time with. I just love his company!! My colleague Lisa hasn't any plans for the weekend so I suggested that she joins us. I hope they get on well, but not too well of course! I've always fancied Jason, but justsecretly of course. He's never shown any interest in me so I doubt he'd respond well if I told him!! We head out of work and after changing our clothes and applying more makeup.
"Wow, you girls look gorgeous" He says.
I'm about to respond saying "Charmer" when Lisa says "Thank you Jason" and gives him a big smile.
"Come on you too" I say and start walking to the Lion and Lobster. It's a great local pub in Brighton.
"My round" I say as we head in the door "Who's having what?"
"Pint of my usual" Jason says "Thanks"
"How about you Lisa?"
"Gin and Tonic please"
"Okay, find a table and I'll join you"
After waiting for about twenty minutes I'm served and I wander around with a tray trying to find them. They are on a small table chatting like they have known each other forever. I put the drinks tray on the table and sit down.
We chat for a while and then Lisa offers to buy the next drink. While she's at the bar I ask Jason
"What do you think of Lisa then?"
"Haha blunt question much"
"So are you going to answer it?"
"Haha okay, I think she's lovely, gorgeous and I might consider asking her out later" he says winking at me.
"Oh my days you're not serious, you don't even know her" I say fuming. How dare he like her and not me.
"I am serious, and isn't getting to know people what dates are for?!"
"I guess so" I reply frowning.
"What's wrong?" Jason asks.
I wonder if I should tell him the truth but I know he would just laugh at me and I would be humiliated as well as losing my friend.. So after thirty seconds I reply
"Nothing"
"Well cheer up then babe and when I suggest going to a club say you don't want to go, okay?"
"Okay"
We enjoy our drinks and then Jason and Lisa head off to the Honey club.I stay for another drink and try to fend off a couple of guys who try to chat me up before getting a taxi home. I go out of my mind the next day waiting for Jason to call me but he doesn't and when I call him his phone just rings and rings. He eventually calls me on Sunday evening.
"Hi Amy"
"Hey Jase, I've been so worried, are you okay?"
"Haha I'm fine, better than fine actually"
"So did you have fun clubbing"
"Yes, and since then actually. I only left Lisa's a couple of hours ago!"
"A couple of hours ago?" I repeat not knowing what to say as I'm completely in shock!
"You okay?" he asked then.
I swallow and say "Yes of course, sorry"
"You've been acting weirdly since Friday, you not happy about me and Lisa?" he asks.
"Yes, I'm very happy for you, it's just..." I pause and nervously say "I can't talk to you about this over the phone, can we meet tomorrow?"
"Of course. I'm seeing Lisa at eight so it'll have to be before that"
We agree that we will meet at the pub at six pm.
*************************************
The next day at work Lisa comes up to me excitedly.
"Thank you for introducing me to Jason" she says.
"No problem" I reply.
"We're going out again tonight, I can't wait" she says excitedly.
"That's great, have fun" I reply calmly hiding my annoyance.
*************************************
After work I go straight to the pub and head inside feeling nervous with lots of butterflies in my stomach. Can I tell him? I wonder. Jason's there at a table with drinks in front of him for us. A pint for him and half for me.
"Hi Jase" I say sitting down and taking a sip of my lager.
"Hi Amy" he says then adds "So what do you need to say to me?"
"Um..." I say feeling incredibly nervous "Have you ever fancied a friend?"
He blushes then and I wonder why but then he responds "Yes, I have"
"Well I like a friend too, I've always..." I swallow "...liked you"
"Oh" he replies "Why didn't you tell me before?"
"I thought it would ruin our friendship" I say "I hope it hasn't?"
"It's just ironic really because I liked you the moment I met you, you made me laugh so much, and still do"
"Why didn't you ask me out?"
"There are always men around you asking you out and you never give them the time of day"
"What men" I reply confused.
"Tell me, when Lisa and I left did any men come and speak to you?"
I think back to Friday "Maybe one or two losers" I reply.
"Exactly! you always call them losers, but they're just guys interested in you! If I had asked you out when we met I would have had the same disinterested response!"
I'm speechless, just shocked at what he's said.
"I have to go and meet Lisa now" he says looking at his watch. He quickly finishes the last of his pint.
"So what I told you didn't make any difference?" I ask. "You are still going to date Lisa?"
"Yes, you're too late, I really like Lisa, but we'll always be friends, right?"
"Yes of course" I reply chocked up.
He kisses me on the cheek and heads out of the bar. Tears fall as soon as he has left, I feel so sad and foolish. A guy comes up to me a couple of minutes later and asks
"Are you okay Amy?"
"How do you know my name?" reply still crying.
"You're in here all the time, and your gorgeous, of course I know your name"
I look at him and realise he looks like a nice guy, probably one of the guys who always ask me out.
"What's your name" I ask wiping the tears away.
"I'm Gavin" he says and then asks "Can I get you a drink?"
"Hi Gavin, that would be lovely, thank you"
He heads up to the bar and buys the drinks. We chat away and seem to get on really well. When I tell him it's time for me to go home he asks me
"Can I take your number?"
"Yes" I reply
We exchange numbers and he says he will ring me the next day to arrange a date. I realise I'm looking forward to it! Sure enough he rings me the next night and after chatting a bit we arrange to meet for dinner on Friday. I can't stop smiling! When Jason rings me later to let me know how his evening with Lisa went I can't wait to tell him about my date with Gavin. He's really excited for me and I'm so grateful that we are still friends after everything we discussed. The smile doesn't leave my face all week. All my work colleagues compliment me on looking good! On Friday I get dressed up for the date wearing a dress and my nicest heels. I meet him at Gah's Chinese restaurant.
"You look gorgeous" he tells me.
"Thanks Gavin" I reply smiling.
Gavin's actually really funny and we have a great evening with lots of laughs. I order satay chicken and he goes for prawns in sweet and sour sauce. It comes on big plates in the middle of the table so we each try both dishes. The food is wonderful. As we head outside he says
"I've had a wonderful evening"
"Me too, it's been great"
He leans closer and kisses me then whispers in my ear saying
"When shall we go out again?"
"Soon" I respond wrapping my arms around his neck as we kiss again.

The Boy Next Door
My name is Rachel and I'm currently on the train from London Victoria to Brighton right now. It's the final part of a long journey because I live in Paris. I've lived there for five years working in a boutique selling designer clothes. I love my job, and I love Paris so I will miss it while I'm away but I have to see my parent's from time to time. It's their anniversary in 3 days so they are having a big party. I'm dreading it because my parent's best friends the Johnson's who live next door, and have done all my life will be there and their son Ben. Ben is two months younger than me. He and I were best friends all through our childhood until that summer. Our parent's always expected us to marry so it's an extremely awkward situation. They would be devastated if they knew we had fallen out so we keep up a ridiculous pretence whenever I come home. It's very tiring.
When we arrive in Brighton I head towards the back entrance of the station and see Ben's car. Oh merde! I can't do this I think but I know I have to. I walk over to him and say
"Hi" as I get into his car.
"Hi Rachel, I've missed you" he says
"Let's just get going" I reply
"Rachel please, I'm so so sorry. Please forgive me and let's be friends again" he pleads.
I hate it when he does this.
"No, we'll never be friends again, not after..." I cut of feeling a big lump in my throat.
He sighs and we head off home. Although it doesn't feel like home anymore. He ruined all that.
As we park both our parents rush out to welcome me.
"Trop" I mutter ( too much).
"Ils sont hereux de vous voir" Ben replies (they're happy to see you).
I'm surprised he remembers so much French. He hasn't been there since University as far as I'm aware.
"Je vous ai surpris? he asks smirking. (Have I surprised you).
"Va te faire foutre" (Fuck off)
"Hahaha" he laughs not getting the message.
Our parents look bemused, but hug me and we head indoors. Lunch is ready on the table so we sit straight down and start eating. Of course I am sat opposite Ben as usual, who winks at me. He really doesn't have a clue. I guess he probably doesn't realise how much I've changed though from the relaxed, happy girl I used to be.
The french really know how to enjoy food and go shopping every day for fresh food spending quite a lot. I've got into the same habit and love fresh, healthy food. The spread on the table looks wonderful. Lots of cold meat, salads and olives. We all fill our plates and tuck in.
"It's wonderful to see you" Mum says after we had finished our plates and were just picking at the masses of food left.
"You too Mum. It's lovely to see you too Dad. I've missed you both"
"Please don't leave it so long next time" My Dad responds.
"I promise I won't. So what do you guys want to do while I'm here?"
"Well we're busy with party organising tomorrow so we thought you could spend the day with Ben"
"Okay" I reply keeping my tone neutral. "But I can help with party planning if you like?"
"No don't worry, we just have to do the last bit of planning tomorrow" Mum replies.
We clear up lunch and then the Johnson's head home.
"See you tomorrow" Ben says as they head out the door.
"Can't wait"
"Porter quelque chose de gentil" he jokes (Wear something nice).
"N'ai-je pas toujours?" (Don't I always?).
"Oui, tu es belle" he replies winking (Yes, you are beautiful).
I sigh then, I really must avoid these flirty chats with him. I shouldn't have had so much wine at lunch.
"Everything okay with you two?" Dad asks
"Yes everything's fine Dad"
"I often wonder if we put too much pressure on you both, I'm glad you've made your own choices Rach and I'm glad you're still friends"
"Me too Dad, I love you" I say hugging him.
"Love you too darling"
I head upstairs to my old room which looks exactly the same as when I left three years ago. I unpack my belongings and put them all away. Then sit on my bed. I hear noise outside and have a look out the window. My room is in the back of the house so I can look out into the garden. I see Ben kicking a football around. I wonder why he never left home and if he even works. Our lives are so different now.
I grab my bag and head out of the front door and start walking down to the beach. The beach is the one thing I miss in Paris. It's wonderful to see the sea again. Brighton and Hove is always windy so my long brunette hair flies around and in front of my face. It feels wonderful so I keep walking all the way to the Pier. On the pier I buy a drink and sit down on one of the benches drinking it and enjoying the sea air.
As I sit there a girl comes up to me and taps me on the shoulder.
"Rachel?" she asks
"Jenna" I reply seeing her face "It's wonderful to see you"
"You too, it's been so long"
"How are you doing?"
"I'm good thanks, I'm engaged now" she says showing me her ring.
"That's beautiful, do I know him?"
"No, I met him at work, how long are you here?"
"Three weeks, it's my parent's anniversary tomorrow"
"Come to the wedding Rachel, it's next Friday"
"Is she going to be there?" I ask nervously.
"Yes she is" Jenna signs.
"I'd love to come but I can't handle seeing her. I'm so sorry"
"It's a shame, but don't worry" She changes the subject "So do you have a boyfriend?"
"No, I always seem to be single!"
"That's a shame! Anyway I have to go, lots to do, see you soon hopefully"
"Bye" I wave as she walks away.

The next day I wear a dress and ankle boots. Looking in the mirror I hope it's nice enough but I don't want to be overdressed.
"You look gorgeous" Dad says when I walk downstairs.
"Thanks Dad"
Just then Ben rings the doorbell so I grab my bag and head outside.
"Morning gorgeous" he says kissing my cheek.
"Morning Benjamin" I respond rolling my eyes "Where are you taking me today?"
"I thought we'd go to the Sea Life Centre and then take a tour around the Royal Pavillion!"
"You told me to dress up for that?" I reply shocked and annoyed.
"Well we're also going for dinner later!"
"Oh! Well let's go then"
We drive along the seafront and try to find a parking space.
"Would you ever move back here?" Ben asks.
"No I wouldn't"
"Why not"
"You know why" I reply and add "And I love my life in Paris"
He parks and then says
"We need to talk Rach"
"There's no point"
We get out of the car and Ben grabs my hands and says
"Seriously Rachel, we need to talk about this"
"Why, there's no point. It won't change anything"
"Come with me"
He walks and I have no choice but to follow as he has hold of my hand and won't let go. He heads onto the beach, right down close by the sea.
"Listen to me Rachel"
"I am"
"I'm sorry, I've never forgiven myself for hurting you"
"Why did you do it?" I ask quietly.
"I was an idiot, young and stupid. I should have known better".
"I just can't believe you slept with her, my best friend. I lost you and my best friend all in one day"
"I'm so sorry Rachel, I hate that I've hurt you" he said with tears running down his cheeks. "Please can you forgive me?"
No, I just can't Ben" I yell and walk away.
"Rachel" he shouts "Please!!"
Once I am out of his sight I can't stop the tears. I sit on the floor and let them flow. I remember how I went to Ben's house one day to see him and walked in on he and Joanne in bed together. It hurts so much to think about it. I always assumed Ben and I would be together forever. I put the image out of my mind as best I can. When I am sated I remember I can't go home because my parents will realise something is wrong so I decide to go to the Sea Life centre anyway. There are loads of kids running around so I can see that not many adults come here without children but it's so interesting.I love the sting rays floating above me in the tunnels. I stay there as long as I can before heading outside. Then I head to Macdonald's for some food. As I start walking back towards Hove and home I see Ben's car. I peer in the window and see him sitting there. He see's me, winds down the window and says
"Rachel, thank god you're okay, I was worried".
"I'm fine, can you take me home now, I don't want our parents to think something is wrong".
"Sure, get in" he paused. "Um Rach..."
"Don't, just don't"
"Okay" he sighs "I won't mention it again".
"Thank you"
He parks he car and he heads inside his parent's house while I head into my parent's house.

The next day I decide to wear another dress for Mum and Dad's party. I bring down my present and card for them down at breakfast.
"Happy Anniversary!
"Thanks Rachel" Dad says and gives me a big hug.
"Thanks Rachel" Mum says too.
"So when's everyone arriving?"
"Soon"
Just as she's putting the breakfast things in the dishwasher the doorbell goes.
"I'll get it" I say heading to the door.
It's the Johnson's. I welcome everyone in while trying to avoid eye contact with Ben.
"Bonjour Belle" He says (Morning beautiful).
"Bonjour Ben" I respond, my hackles rising.
We're fortunate with the weather so everyone sits outside while I hang around indoors waiting for guests to arrive.
Suddenly I feel Ben close to me and he wraps his arms around me. He must have sneaked inside.
"Let me go" I say.
"No" he responds kissing my neck. He moves up to kiss my mouth and I can't help responding.
"Forgive me" he says. "Tell me you'll be my girlfriend".
"No, you'll hurt me again" I say angrily..
"I promise I won't. I've regretted what I did everyday since. I won't make the same mistake again"
"I can't trust you"
"Just try, please" he pleads.
"I want to but I'm just not sure I can"
"Please try, I miss you so much"
"Okay" I say quietly
"Thank you Rachel, I won't make you regret it"
He kisses me again and again and it's wonderful. I've missed being close to him so much.
"Je t'aime" he says (I love you).
